I've been using my Eee PC 1000 for three-and-a-half years now and, somewhat understandably, the battery isn't what it used to be. Unplugged from the mains it only lasts about an hour and a half using Wi-Fi, when it was about 5-6 hours when I first got it.
I can buy an Asus original replacement 6600mAh battery at a decent price, but I've also spotted two batteries made by a company called Cameron Sino - anyone heard of them?
One of the Cameron Sino batteries is a couple of quid more expensive but with a third more power capacity and the other has double the capacity at double the price. I'm not convinced of the value of buying a 13000mAh batttery when I could pay as much and get two Asus originals; I'm slightly more tempted by the third party 8800mAh battery but I don't know how reliable the manufacturer is.

In the last few days though, I've read some posts on other forums about the durability of the 1018 (The screen in particular), and asus products in general. Does anyone have more insight into this? Exactly how careful am I going to have to be with this eeepc? I planned on bringing it to classes with me in a soft case, but now I'm a little worried.

And, because it crops up as a point against this particular model in the review, is everyone as mystified as m'self about the apparent popularity of shiny netbook screens? It seems to have been a dividing characteristic ever since that first rivalry between the Asus Eee PC 701 and the Acer Aspire One.
(Just curious.)

So glad to have found this site.
I have this new Netbook Asus Eee and am finding I need to do a lot of work on it before I can actually use it.
Little frustrating since I am not a computer person.
I have no word processing and do not want to buy a new one - have CD's from past installations. So I guess the first thing I must do is buy and external CD-Rom drive so I can load Word Perfect or Word on here... is that correct?
If I just go to ebay and type in external cdrom drive will ANY that pop up be ok? Do they burn CD's as well as load & read?
I need to be able to burn photos to CD or DVD so that I do not need to store them on Netbook - apparently not enough room for large numbers of photos.
Should I type in something different (on ebay) to get an external cd rom drive for loading programs and also burning cd's?
Also, when working with photos on here is there such a thing as a little plug in something that would allow me to have more space while working on photos (for example Windows movie maker) that will keep puter running fast and not freeze it up due to overload?
Sorry if questions are incredibly simple minded - like I said, I'm clearly not a computer person.
I have many more questions but thought I would start off gently so as to not frighten off anyone :o)
Thank you very much
Barbara

I'm running the default Xandros Linux on a 901 EeePC. I haven't made any sort of modifications to the system at all. I install updates as they appear, but the past dozen or so haven't installed because of some sort of "dpkg--configure-a" thing it wants me to run, but doing that does absolutely nothing, so I have no idea what the problem there is.
Anyways, that isn't the issue I'm coming here with, just mentioning it in case this lack of being able to update properly can interfere with what I would like to do.
I have Firefox 3.0.4 - the default which my system has upgraded to since I got it in November of last year. Only extensions I've installed are AdBlockPlus and Flashblock (and this was back then, so being as I've had this system for six months it would seem odd if they created a problem now. MediaWrap and QuickPageZoom came preinstalled and are active, Tabscope is deactivated).
In the past few days, I've developed this problem. I've tried the fixes there to no avail.
So I'm getting to the point that I simply want to uninstall Firefox and reinstall it. But I have no clue how I can do that safely without destroying my system (since I've read that installing things on the Eee can be touch and go). I'm usually a Windows user, but I went with Linux for this travel netbook of mine (I've been traveling for the past seven months, and will be continuing to do so for the next year, so this Eee is my primary machine at the moment), but I'm really feeling like I should've just gone with the XP version at this point.
I asked my Linux-using friends for help, and an Ubuntu-using friend suggested these command lines to uninstall and reinstall Firefox, so can any Xandros users confirm that this will work for my Eee? (Or, alternatively, figure out a way to fix this Firefox glitch?)
He said to type:
"sudo apt-get remove firefox-3.0
Then, type in the following lines on the console:
cd ~
sudo rm -R .mozilla
And then reinstall Firefox."
I'm assuming by "reinstall Firefox" that something will pop up then or something?
Thanks for any help!
